UV rays having 254 nm wavelengthare called UV Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI). This wavelength is considered most lethal for Germs. The rays physically attack the DNA of micro-organisms and destroy them. UV-C also removes their reproductive capacities, thus, eliminating them permanently.
Following factors achieve a Kill with UV Light:
- Time: The greater the exposure time (contact time between the contaminant & the UV source), the more UV energy can be delivered to the contaminant resulting in a greater Kill Rate.
- Intensity: The greater the intensity (strength of the UV source) the more UV energy can be delivered to the contaminant resulting in a greater Kill Rate.
KILL RATE = TIME x INTENSITY
